E-RATER IMPROVES WRITING

With today’s SMS and communications like Twitter or What’s App, a new abbreviated text language has emerged, providing a quick effective way to communicate. Its adoption is rapidly causing a dilemma with the ability of students to spell and write correctly. Turnitin has developed a new tool to help educators and students improve academic writing.

In 2011 it released Smarter, Faster Grading with ETS® e-Rater®. This grammar analysis tool located within GradeMark, automatically flags grammar, style, usage, mechanics and spelling errors reducing time taken to correct papers and facilitates the guidance students need to improve their writing skills.

The e-Rater can be optimised for varying levels of language and is eagerly sort after by first or second language teachers. Durban University of Technology has added e-Rater to their current licence profile and we look forward to feedback on how it has helped improve the standard of academic writing at the university.
